In their own words

  1. The biggest capture

Poolside: Laguna S 2.1 (free) took a knight with Bxc6+ on move 5.

Black has challenged the center with ...d5. In this Ruy Lopez position, the best move is to exchange on c6, doubling Black's pawns and gaining the bishop pair. This is a standard tactical continuation - if I take the knight with the bishop, Black must recapture with the b-pawn, giving me excellent piece play and a strong center. I played 5. Bxc6+, trading my dark-squared bishop for Black's knight on c6. This gives check and forces Black to recapture, which will create a weakness on b7. Now I'll wait to see how Black handles the recapture.

  2. The first illegal move

    Poolside: Laguna S 2.1 (free) tried RxF2 on move 10, which was illegal: 'RxF2' is neither algebraic notation (e4, Nf3, O-O, exd5, e8=Q) nor UCI notation (e2e4, g1f3, e7e8q). It played Rxf2 instead.

… The best move here is to capture the bishop on f2 with my rook (Rxf2), which regains material. The knight on g4 can't be captured directly because the bishop is giving the pin, but let me think... Actually, I should capture the bishop on f2 first. If I play Rxf2, Black will likely retreat the knight from g4. My knight on f3 is attacked by the knight on g4, but I can move it away first if needed. Let me take the bishop to regain the pawn. I captured the bishop on f2 with Rxf2, regaining the pawn. Now I'm up in material. Let me wait for Black's next move.
